Randy De Puniet starts from pole position for the second time in his Grand Prix career, the other being at the Rio GP last year. The Frenchman´s pole time is the fastest ever lap of the Welkom circuit by a 250cc machine.

Manuel Poggiali starts 21 places further up the grid than he did in Japan where he went on to win the race. Poggiali set a new lap record in South Africa last year on his way to taking the 125cc race.

Franco Battaini finished in second place last year in South Africa, his best result of 2002. Fonsi Nieto set the fastest lap of the race 12 months ago in South Africa on his way to finishing in third place. His team-mate Toni Elias crossed the line in sixteenth place last year in South Africa after having a stop-and-go penalty, this being the only race all year at which he did not score points.

Hector Faubel´s tenth place on the grid is his best ever qualifying result.

If 16-year old Chaz Davies finishes in the top 15 he will become the youngest ever rider to score points in 250cc Grand Prix racing.
