Dani Pedrosa explains his race strategy used to perfection in Welkom

Dani Pedrosa demonstrated in the final laps of the 125 GP on Sunday the cleverness and shrewdness of his racing character. The youngster from Barcelona rose from fourth position, passing three riders in the last few turns, to cross the finish line first. Pedrosa remained in the leading group the whole race but could not overtake Japanese rider Youichi Ui until the very end when all six riders started squabbling for positions. This victory, his first of the 2003 season allows him to enter the following Marlboro Grand Prix of Spain as leader of the 125cc Championship standings. He carries a one point advantage over Steve Jenkner and is two points ahead of Andrea Dovizioso, the two other riders who yesterday also climbed on the podium. Here´s what he had to say after leaving the track in Welkom:

`I thought it might be possible to win because I felt so good during the warm-up. In the race I got off to a bad start, I released the clutch too quick and almost stalled the bike, but I managed to get going and during the race I felt that the motorcycle was not accelerating so well; I was staying in the tow of Dovizioso and Ui and able to keep up. The last five laps I was in fourth and could not overtake them, so in the last few corners I gave everything I had. I was on the point of crashing in the last turn because the front wheel of the bike was beginning to slide away as I got past Ui, finally I could hold on to win. This was the only way to do it, I was lucky to be able to slipstream in the straight during the last lap and they couldn´t come back at me; if I had gone on the left hand side, without doubt they would have overtaken. But I managed to stay in front and that helped me a lot. To be honest it was worth taking the risk if the reward was the podium! I don´t know if this was my best race but it was certainly one of the more difficult because the bike did not pull like I wanted and I had to make up a lot on the brakes to compensate for it.´
