Randy De Puniet starts from pole position for the second successive race and for the third time in his GP career. De Puniet's second place in South Africa is his best ever GP result. Manuel Poggiali has never finished higher than 9th from his four starts at Jerez in the 125cc class.

Franco Battaini qualified on pole last year at Jerez and then went on to finish fourth after a collision with Marco Melandri near the end of the race.

Roberto Rolfo's second place at Jerez last year equalled his best finish in Grand Prix racing. Rolfo is still looking for his first GP win, having finished on the podium on eleven occasions including seven times in second.

Fonsi Nieto scored his first ever Grand Prix win last year at Jerez. Toni Elias' tenth place in Spain last year is his best GP result at the Jerez circuit. Chaz Davies, who starts from a best ever 18th place on the grid, became the youngest ever rider to score points in the 250cc class of GP racing at the last round in South Africa.
