Poggiali holds firm but Battaini impressive

Series leader Manuel Poggiali claimed his first pole position of the season in the 250 class, as wet conditions impeded any of the riders from improving their provisional qualifying positions. Franco Battaini, who starts the race from second on the grid, was the fastest man in the wet today and tomorrow promises another intriguing battle in the quarter-litre class whatever the weather, with fellow front row starters Randy De Puniet and Fonsi Nieto also impressive. Local hope De Puniet was second fastest today with Nieto third, whilst Poggiali also lapped in the top five.

Wet specialist Naoki Matsudo once again demonstrated his prowess on the Yamaha with the fourth fastest time of the day, and could be the man to watch as he starts from the second row in eighth. Home riders Erwan Nigon, Hugo Marchand and Silvain Guintoli will be praying for rain having all lapped in the top ten in the wet this afternoon.
