Elias´ second win draws him right up to Poggi in the Championship

With his second consecutive win Toni Elías narrowed the battle for the 250cc World Championship. His dramatic victory in Jerez two weeks ago with an injured hand and having to overtake a number of riders on the last lap, served to confirm that he is on the right path after a hesitant start to the season. The triumph in Le Mans means that Elías has eclipsed the brace of wins notched by his Aprilia companion Manuel Poggiali in the first two rounds of 2003, and he now lies second in the standings only five points away from the former 125cc World Champ. Poggiali left France with an empty bag after crashing out in a spectacular collision with Sebastian Porto on the fifth lap.

On a memorable day for the Spanish in motorcycle GP racing and at the scene of his first podium in the World Championships (3rd place in 2001, when riding the 125) Toni Elías repeated the result his team obtained at the venue in 2002. The rider in question one year ago was Fonsi Nieto. This season, without a doubt Elias is the current form rider of the all Spanish line-up, and seems to have adapted better to the newly revamped Aprilia 250, a bike that is notoriously difficult to find a winning set-up.

`Here I won my first podium two years ago and today I have taken my second victory of the year´, explained Elías. `With all the problems we had this weekend this is a good result for me and for the team. I am really happy because today the bike felt so much better but we still have to keep working to find a bit more acceleration. The victory now means that I am second in the Championship and only five points from being the leader,´ confirmed the Catalan rider.
