Naoki Matsudo starts to test at Brno after taking best result of the year at Le Mans
Naoki Matsudo, the only Yamaha representative in the 250cc World Championship, obtained his best result of the year last weekend at the GP Polini of France with 5th position. The Japanese rider, who today starts testing at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic, recounts his impressive race performance last Sunday to motograndprix.com.
`The Le Mans circuit is one of my favourites and from the first practice session I had a good feeling on the bike, even though we could not adjust the machine perfectly to suit the changing weather conditions. In truth I did not want to have to compete with a wet track because I was sliding a lot and was almost on the point of crashing at least four times.
In the race I noticed that I was lacking a little in acceleration and the first few riders in the leading group were able to pull away, so I was trying to make up time in the corners. I started to fight with Rolfo and Nieto and I thought I might be able to try for the podium but when we passed Guintoli, Rolfo left us behind. It's a shame I could not spar more with them but I am satisfied with the result.
This is my fourth season and looking solely at results, I have to say that this is my best. I am constantly improving my times because I am using the same bike as last year and we have details and information for every circuit. This allows me to find a good set-up very quickly in the first day of practice. My objective for the year is to score points in all the races like in 2002. Now I am seventh in the standings and I would like to sustain that position at least. By the end of the season I want to break into the top five.
The next race will be in Mugello and the Aprilias are very strong there; that will cost us. However today we start to test in Brno. This is the first test the team have organized between the GPs and we will working a lot on how to improve the engine.
After the race at Le Mans, with my girlfriend we went to Belgium to meet with some friends and then yesterday we spent the whole day driving the motorhome to reach the Czech Republic. After the test I return to the house the team keep for me during the European stage of the season, which is based in Rosenberg, some 200 km from Frankfurt.
