De Puniet blasts pole record on first day

Randy De Puniet took his first steps towards making up for his huge disappointment in Mugello last week with the fastest ever lap by a 250cc machine at Catalunya. The Frenchman clocked a superb lap of 1´41.117 this afternoon, 0.144 seconds quicker than the previous record held by the legendary Daijiro Kato, despite searing temperatures which rose well above 30ºC. Toni Elias, riding at his home circuit, made steady improvements but could only get to within 0.434 seconds of De Puniet, who dominated the session throughout. Series leader Manuel Poggiali was third quickest but was almost a full second off the pace of De Puniet, whilst Franco Battaini continued his good form with the final slot on the provisional front row.

Sebastian Porto was the highest non-Aprilia rider, heading up the provisional second row in fifth place, ahead of Anthony West, Fonsi Nieto and Naoki Matsudo.
