Nieto on pole for home race

Pablo Nieto snatched his third career pole position in the final official practice session for the 125cc race at Catalunya, maintaining his impressive qualifying record on native soil. Nieto´s two other poles have come at Jerez, and the Spanish rider today demonstrated that he is not prepared to let all the home glory go to joint championship leader Dani Pedrosa. Nieto clocked a new pole record 1´51.043 in searing temperatures this afternoon as many other riders, including Pedrosa, failed to improve their times from yesterday. Provisional pole holder Lucio Cecchinello did improve but eventually dropped down the order as first Nieto and then Andrea Dovizioso on the last lap pushed him back to third place. Nieto´s 16 year old team-mate Hector Barbera also posted a late effort to move up to the front row for the first time in his young career.

Pedrosa eventually dropped back to the second row in sixth, just behind Alex de Angelis, who also failed to better his provisional front row time. Youichi Ui and Steve Jenkner did improve, however, and complete the second row positions, dropping Casey Stoner back to ninth.
