De Angelis takes provisional pole in record time

Alex De Angelis set a new pole record to seal the front spot on the provisional grid for the 125 race in sunny conditions at Assen this afternoon. The San Marino teenager clocked a best time of 2´11.398, almost half a second within Dani Pedrosa´s previous record of 2´11.882, although still two tenths outside the circuit record of 2´11.209 clocked by Joan Olive in last year´s race. Casey Stoner had set a blistering pace at the start of the session, registering 2´11.632 on just his fourth lap. That time was enough to seal second place for the Australian, who ran into difficulties in the later stages and was unable to improve when mounting a pole attack on De Angelis.

Youichi Ui secured a provisional front row spot in third whilst Hector Barbera came out on top in a late Spanish battle for the final top four position with Jorge Lorenzo. Both riders looked on course for a pole challenge with a series of quick laps but they faded in the final two sections of this long and challenging circuit. Rising Finnish star Mika Kallio was knocked off the front row and back down to sixth place by the Spanish pair, and is joined on the second row by Steve Jenkner and Gino Borsoi. Series leader Pedrosa suffered technical difficulties and could only qualify in eleventh.
