Nieto edges out Elias for provisional pole

Spanish team-mates Fonsi Nieto and Toni Elias dominated a fiercely contested first qualifying session for the 250cc class, as the top five riders in the championship vied for the psychological edge at the start of a weekend which could see any one of them take the lead in the overall standings. Elias, who took his first ever victory in the 125cc race here in 2001, dominated the session with a constant stream of fast laps, but was edged off top spot by two fast efforts at the end of the session from Nieto. The closing few minutes seemed like the final laps of a race as Nieto diced with current series leader Manuel Poggiali, who clocked the third fastest time.

Randy De Puniet, who lies seven points behind Poggiali and joint second in the championship with Elias and Nieto, was beaten to the final front row slot by Roberto Rolfo. The Frenchman is joined on the provisional second row by Franco Battaini, Sebastian Porto and Anthony West.
