Interesting stats and figures ahead of the MotoGP race in Brno

The top eleven riders on the grid have lapped faster than the official lap record set last year by Daijiro Kato.

Valentino Rossi starts from pole position for the fifth time in 2003. Rossi has finished on the podium at the last 15 races. The last time he failed to get on the podium was at this GP in Brno last year, when he retired from the race with tyre problems. Rossi's pole position time is the fastest ever lap of Brno by a motorcycle.

Sete Gibernau finished in fourth place last year at Brno, his best result of the 2002 season. If Gibernau should win he will become the first rider to win back-to-back races in the premier-class since Rossi won in Portugal and then Brazil last year and the first person other than Rossi to win back-to-back races in the MotoGP class since Garry McCoy won in Portugal and then Valencia in 2000. Loris Capirossi has finished in the top six in each of his five starts at Brno in the 500cc class, with a best result of third place in 2001.

For the second successive race Carlos Checa is the only Yamaha rider who has qualified on the front two rows of the grid. Checa's fifth place finish last year is his best result from eight starts in the premier-class at Brno.

Troy Bayliss starts from sixth place on the grid for the third successive race. At the German Grand Prix Bayliss finished in front of his team-mate Capirossi for the first time in a race in which both riders have completed the distance.
Nicky Hayden's seventh place on the grid is his best ever qualifying result in Grand Prix racing. His previous best was 11th on the grid at the second race of the year in South Africa.

Tohru Ukawa has finished in the top five in each of his seven starts at Brno; five times in the 250cc class and for the last two years in the premier-class.

This is the 12th time Alex Barros has ridden at Brno in the premier-class, his best result being third in 1998, just 1.5sec behind the winner Max Biaggi.
