Wildcards for the Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal

Four nations will be represented by wildcard riders in the 250cc race at the Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal this weekend although the flag of the host nation will be carried by just one man. Miguel Praia makes his World Championship debut riding an Aprilia and it promises to be a huge challenge for the 25 year old, who usually rides in a national Honda CBR 600 series.

Fredrik Watz makes his first appearance of the season riding a Yamaha. The 26 year old, who clinched the 250cc Swedish Championship title just a few weeks ago, was due to ride at Donington earlier in the season but missed out and now finally gets his Grand Prix chance. Fellow Scandinavian Vesa Kallio, from Finland, rides for the third successive race, also on a Yamaha. Kallio finished 19th at the Sachsenring in July, improving by one place as he took 18th at Brno three weeks later.

Spanish rider Alvaro Molina completes the wildcard list and is easily the most experienced of the four. After already competing in Jerez and Catalunya earlier this season, Molina will make the twelfth Grand Prix appearance of his career in Portugal as he once again attempts to score his first ever World Championship points.
