Interesting stats and facts ahead of the 250cc race in Portugal

Toni Elias, who starts from pole position for the first time in the 250cc class, finished in thirteenth place last year in Portugal after crashing and re-joining the race three times.

Randy De Puniet starts from the front row for the eighth time in 2003. De Puniet has had six podium finishes this year, more than any other rider in the 250cc class.

Sylvain Guintoli starts from the front row for the first time in his GP career. His previous best qualifying result was sixth on the grid at Assen earlier this year. This is the first time France have had two riders on the front row for a 250cc GP since the British GP at Donington in 1996 when Olivier Jacque and Jean-Philippe Ruggia both started from the front row.

Manuel Poggiali, who won the 125cc GP at Estoril in 2001, starts from the front row for the ninth time in 2003.

Roberto Rolfo is the only rider in the 250cc class to have scored points at every GP this year. Fonsi Nieto won last year in Portugal after crashing on lap 13 and re-joining the race.

Chaz Davies' 14th place on the grid is his best ever qualifying result in GP racing, his previous best being 16th on the grid at Le Mans.
