Interesting stats and facts ahead of the MotoGP showdown in Estoril

The top sixteen riders on the grid have lapped faster than the current lap record held by Loris Capirossi. The top twelve riders on the grid have lapped faster than Carlos Checa's pole position time from last year.

Loris Capirossi's lap record from 2001 still stands, making Estoril one of only two circuits currently in use where the lap record is held by a two-stroke machine, the other being Rio where Tady Okada still hold the lap record from 1997. Capirossi starts from pole for the third time in 2003 and for the eighth time in his career in the premier-class. He has never taken victory in the premier-class after having started from pole position. Loris Capirossi's pole position time is the fastest ever lap of Estoril by a motorcycle.

Max Biaggi, who starts from the front row for the ninth time in 2003, has not finished on the podium on his three visits to Estoril.

If Valentino Rossi finishes in the top three it will be his 17th consecutive podium finish, which equals the string of podium finishes achieved by Mick Doohan during the 1994/95 seasons. Only Giacomo Agostini has had a longer string of consecutive podium finishes in the premier-class, with 22 during the 1967/68/69 seasons. If Valentino Rossi should win he will become the first rider to win back-to-back races in the premier-class since he won in Portugal and then Brazil last year.

Sete Gibernau has not finished a race at Estoril; he crashed out in 2000 after leading in the early stages, in 2001 he retired from the race with machine damage after being forced off the track on the opening lap and he crashed again last year while leading the wet race with a couple of laps to go. Gibernau has finished on the podium at the last five consecutive races.

Olivier Jacque's qualifying time is the fastest ever lap of Estoril by a Yamaha rider. Jacque celebrated his 30th birthday between the Czech and Portuguese GP's.

Shinya Nakano and Valentino Rossi are the only two riders in the MotoGP class to have scored points at the first ten GPs of the year.

Carlos Checa's second place finish at Portugal was his best result of the 2002 season and was also the last time that he has finished on the podium.

Makoto Tamada's ninth place on the grid is his best qualifying result since the opening race of the year in Japan.
