Elias takes second successive pole

Toni Elias streaked to pole position in the 250cc class and is a clear favourite for victory tomorrow after dominating all four sessions at the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix. The Spaniard, who moved up to second in the championship with victory at Estoril in the last round, was rarely threatened at the top of the time sheets this afternoon as he set a new pole record of 1'53.457, although series leader Manuel Poggiali did offer some resistance and moved to within 0.132 seconds of his closest current challenger for the title. Roby Rolfo crashed this morning and did not set a particularly quick lap in the afternoon as he looked to make up for time lost on his race set-up. The Italian maintained a front row slot in third place, however, whilst Randy De Puniet joined the front row in fourth.

De Puniet's progress was at the expense of Fonsi Nieto, who crashed this afternoon and ended the session over one second slower than his best effort from yesterday. Nieto lines up in fifth and is joined on the second row by Sebastian Porto, Sylvain Guintoli and Franco Battaini.
