De Puniet and Elias hold off Takahashi attack

Randy De Puniet and Toni Elias withstood pressure from determined wildcard Yuki Takahashi to take the top two positions in the first qualifying practice for the 250cc race. Aprilia rider De Puniet set a time of 1'53.247, just 0.298 seconds quicker than his factory colleague Elias, with Takahashi a further 0.806 second behind in third place. Series leader Manuel Poggiali struggled to match the pace of his two title rivals today and was over one second off the pole time, although his efforts were enough to seal the final place on the provisional front row.

Takahashi's fellow wildcard rider Hiroshi Aoyama was fifth fastest and leads the provisional second row from Franco Battaini, Sylvain Guintoli and Sebastian Porto. The slim title chances of Fonsi Nieto may have been reduced further today, after the Spaniard struggled to the fifteenth fastest time behind wildcards Tomoyoshi Koyama and Choujun Kameya.
