Dovizioso takes provisional pole in Motegi

Andrea Dovizioso snatched provisional pole position for the Gauloises Pacific Grand Prix of Motegi at the end of an open and entertaining first qualifying practice. The session was dominated by Casey Stoner until a frantic final few minutes when the young Australian returned to his pit garage with a mechanical problem to watch a five-way battle for pole. Alex De Angelis initially dislodged Stoner from the top of the time sheets but was soon replaced by Dani Pedrosa as the traffic caused by an entry list of 38 riders began to intensify. De Angelis responded but was held up within the bunches searching for vital slipstreams down the long straights of the Japanese circuit.

Spanish teenagers Jorge Lorenzo and Hector Barbera were also baulked on potential pole laps, but Dovizioso found a clean line to clock a time of 1'58.988 – just under a second slower than the pole record held by Pedrosa, who was today forced to settle for second. De Angelis and Lorenzo complete the provisional front row, with Stoner eventually dropping to the second row in fifth ahead of Simoncelli, Barbera and Perugini.
