Pedrosa begins title quest with provisional pole at Sepang

Dani Pedrosa today made a firm declaration of his intent to lift the 125cc title at the Marlboro Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix with provisional pole position for Sunday's race. The Spanish teenager set a time of 2'14.991 to hold off the challenge of veteran pair Mirko Giansanti and Masao Azuma, who were in resurgent form after both enduring indifferent seasons. Pedrosa needs to score eleven more points than Stefano Perugini to win the title, and today the Italian could only qualify fifteenth fastest.

Andrea Dovizioso completed the provisional front row after a typically hectic finale which saw eight riders pushing for pole position on the last two laps. Dovizioso's effort was one of many to fail in the final section of the circuit which is made up by two crucially long straights, but it was enough to knock Steve Jenkner back to the second row in fifth, just ahead of Mika Kallio, Arnaud Vincent and Jorge Lorenzo. Casey Stoner emerged unhurt from a spectacular highside on his second lap but did not return to the track and provisionally qualified in last place.
