Pedrosa breaks both ankles in free practice crash

125cc World Champion Dani Pedrosa has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2003 season after breaking both of his ankles in a free practice crash at Phillip Island on Friday morning. The 18 year old Spaniard fell from his Honda in the Lukey Heights section of the circuit and slid into the tyre wall, taking the full impact with his feet. Whilst the fracture on his right ankle is relatively straightforward, his left ankle was badly twisted and requires urgent surgery.

Pedrosa was airlifted by helicopter straight to Melbourne, where he will be treated before flying home. Pedrosa's parents and younger brother had arrived in Australia only yesterday to celebrate his World Championship triumph achieved with victory at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia five days ago. Doctors confirmed that the youngster will not be allowed to exert any pressure on the foot for the next 40 days and has no chance of making his home race at Valencia in two weeks' time.
