Valentino Rossi (1st): "That was fun! I saw on the board that maybe we had enough time so I tried for the 30.6 and I am very happy. There are some very fast guys and the level is high. Overall we have a good set-up – we tested here last February and we started the day with similar settings. The speed round this circuit is always very high and you need good edge grip, which we have found. You have to be very sweet on the throttle so not to lose traction."

Loris Capirossi (2nd): "I'm satisfied so far. We had some good tests here last December and I can feel that the bike has improved since then. Of course, it's always great to be on pole, and we should be able to go a little faster tomorrow, but what I'm more concerned about is my race pace which was pretty good today. During our first season with the Desmosedici we've found that the bike suits some tracks better than others, and it seems to like Phillip Island! It's no coincidence that we're up front here, we should be in the fight for victory on Sunday. My only hope is that it doesn't rain."

Troy Bayliss (3rd) : "I feel pretty good, I'm on the front row and that's what it's all about at this stage. I think we can make a bit of an improvement tomorrow but it won't be a lot, today's conditions were about as good as they get here at this time of year. We've got a few little things to work on chassis-wise but we won't be making any special changes for tomorrow. My main goal this weekend is to finish in front of Ukawa and Hayden to help me get fifth in the championship."

Max Biaggi (4th): ""I had to overtake Sete Gibernau on my last fast lap on qualifying tyres and that ruined my lap time, but I'm confident tomorrow I can do a faster lap than 1'31 with no problems. I want to work really hard on dry set-up tomorrow, even though rain is forecast for Sunday. This afternoon was much better than free practice this morning so we are going in the right direction."
