Sheene tribute opens track action at the island

Rubber touched tarmac for the first time this week at the Phillip Island circuit with a touching tribute to motorcycle racing legend Barry Sheene on Thursday. Led by former 500cc Grand Prix star Darryl Beattie, over a hundred motorcyclists rode a 300km pilgrimage from Bairnsdale in Gippsland after a fundraising function for young cancer sufferers, in honour of the former World Champion who died from the disease in March.

Sheene won the 500cc World Championship twice during a stellar career in which he established himself as the sport's first global superstar. Having built up a huge following all over the world, the British rider was then accepted warmly by the Australian public as he settled on the Gold Coast and established a distinguished career as a television commentator.
