Interesting stats and facts leading up to the 250cc race at Phillip Island

Toni Elias starts from pole for the fifth successive race after never having previously held the position in the 250cc GP class. The last rider to take five consecutive poles in the 250s was Tetsuya Harada in 2001. Elias has scored five wins already this year, more victories than any other rider in the 250cc class.

Sebastian Porto, who starts from the front row for the third time in 2003, is still looking for his first podium finish of the year.

Randy De Puniet starts from the front row for the eleventh time in 2003.

Manuel Poggiali, who won the 125cc race last year at Phillip Island, has finished on the podium at the last five consecutive GPs. If Poggiali takes the title in Australia he will be the first rider to win the 250cc Championship in his debut year since Tetsuya Harada won on a Yamaha in 1993. He will also be the second youngest rider ever after Marco Melandri to win the 250cc title and the youngest ever rider to have won both the 125cc and the 250cc World crowns.

Roberto Rolfo is the only rider in the 250cc class to have scored points at all fourteen races this year.
