Rossi on top in Honda pole battle

Valentino Rossi finished today's first qualifying practice for the Gran Premio Marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana on top of the time sheets after an entertaining three way Honda battle for provisional pole position. The World Champion's improving team-mate Nicky Hayden and factory colleague Sete Gibernau pushed the Italian hard all the way throughout the session despite high winds and cool track conditions. However, Rossi dipped under lap record time to secure top spot in a time of 1'33.643 to reconfirm his authority in the class and lead an all-Honda provisional front row which also includes Max Biaggi.

Biaggi jumped from sixth to fourth on his very last lap, dislodging local favourite Carlos Checa from the front row. However, Checa was the highest Yamaha on the provisional grid, qualifying at the head of the second row in front of Loris Capirossi, Tohru Ukawa and last year's winner Alex Barros. Troy Bayliss escaped uninjured from a spectacular crash to qualify ninth fastest, with Makoto Tamada completing the top ten on his first visit to the circuit.
