Simoncelli takes first ever provisional pole

Marco Simoncelli staked his claim as the next Italian prodigy to emerge in the 125cc class with provisional pole for the Valencian GP in cold and windy conditions this afternoon. The track had dried after a morning rain shower but failed to warm up sufficiently for the riders to get near lap records, with the session instead turning into an entertaining jostle for top positions by a number of unexpected riders. 16 year old Simoncelli dominated the time sheets for much of the session but set his fastest lap at the very end in time to hold off an attack from Gabor Talmacsi.

The Hungarian's effort was enough to dislodge Casey Stoner from second spot, relegating the Australian to third ahead of Steve Jenkner, who joins his team-mate Talmacsi on the provisional front row.

In the absence of Dani Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso was the quickest Honda rider with the fifth fastest time. The Italian is joined on the provisional second row by former World Champion Arnaud Vincent, who won his title at this race one year ago, Alvaro Bautista and Mirko Giansanti.
