Suzuki preparing for first winter tests amid tyre uncertainty

Team Suzuki begin their preparations for the 2004 MotoGP World Championship with a three day test at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia next week. Kenny Roberts and John Hopkins are both set to continue with the team and will test modifications to the GSV-R racer on the 28th, 29th and 30th November. However, Team Manager Garry Taylor was unable to confirm which brand of tyres they will be using amid rumours that the team are planning a return to Dunlop from Michelin.

"I can't really comment about the tyre situation, other than to say that it hasn't been decided yet," explained Taylor. "What I can say is that we will be in Malaysia at the end of next week with Kenny and John and probably a Japanese factory test rider. The bike will not be radically different to the one they were riding this season – in fact, it will be basically the same machine with just a few modifications. It is just the typical pre-Christmas test that we have every year."

With rumours also abound that Roberts and Hopkins could be a target for other teams after disappointing seasons on the GSV-R, Taylor added: "I am not aware of interest from any other teams and, in any case, both our riders are under contract. I fully expect Kenny and John to be riding with us next season."
