Byrne makes MotoGP debut with Aprilia at Jerez

British Superbike Champion Shane Byrne today made his official MotoGP debut in a private test with Aprilia at Jerez. The 26 year old was able to ride during the afternoon after bright morning sunshine dried up the effects of overnight rain showers at the Spanish circuit, completing a series of laps on his own before following experienced test rider Marcelino Lucchi.

"Compared to the Superbike this machine is just amazing to ride in every aspect," said Byrne, who had never ridden at Jerez before. "Everything is new but so far I am really impressed. I am used to having a couple of guys working for me so the whole structure of the team is something completely new. There is lots of room for me to improve but I am confident in Aprilia and that the work carried out so far by Lucchi will benefit me. There is a long way to go but so far I am satisfied."

Midway through the session the British rider had a small crash and was helped back to the box by Troy Bayliss. The Australian and his Ducati team-mate Loris Capirossi had waited until the track was completely dry just before 3pm before wheeling out their Desmosedici machines and working intensely on their latest batch of 2004 updates.
