SKYY VODKA Australian Grand Prix voted best race of 2003
The SKYY VODKA Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island in October has been voted the best race of the 2003 MotoGP World Championship by visitors to www.motograndprix.com. Over 32,000 votes were received for one of the most popular surveys of the year on the site, with the Australian event edging out the Gran Premi Marlboro de Catalunya by just over 200 votes. The penultimate race of the season was remembered for a thrilling opening few laps which saw local hero Troy Bayliss dice for the lead before spectacularly crashing out, whilst young rookies Marco Melandri and Nicky Hayden took turns at the front of a packed leading group. There was drama as Valentino Rossi overtook Melandri under a yellow flag, earning himself a ten second penalty which he rendered irrelevant as he stormed to victory by fifteen seconds from Loris Capirossi. For some the highlight of the race came on the final lap, when Hayden overcame Sete Gibernau with a stunning overtaking manoeuvre to snatch third place and his first legitimate podium finish.
