Repsol Honda confirm Barros interest but deny deal

Repsol Honda have denied reports that Brazilian rider Alex Barros has signed with the team to contest the 2004 MotoGP World Championship. HRC's Sport Manager Carlo Fiorani today told www.motograndprix.com that he was confident Barros would be signing with the squad as a replacement for departed World Champion Valentino Rossi, but insisted that reports in the Italian and Brazilian press announcing the deal as official were wide of the mark. Barros must first sever his ties with Yamaha and the factory team's major sponsors Altadis.

"We are waiting for a final answer from Alex Barros before we confirm the final solution for our team," explained Fiorani. "So far there has been no announcement from Alex, no announcement from Yamaha and no announcement from Altadis – so as far as we are concerned there is no news and there is certainly no deal."

Honda are set to begin their preseason testing programme at Sepang later this month, but Fiorani insisted that they will not be panicked into finding a replacement for Barros should he be unable to free himself from his contract. "There is no need for us to rush anything because I am totally confident this issue can be resolved," he said. "In any case, Alex is unfit to ride until the middle of February as he recovers from a shoulder operation so, I repeat, there is no rush. We are not negotiating with any other riders about the position and I am confident we will find a solution with Alex soon."
