Proton Team KR confirm riders but not tyres

Proton Team KR have officially confirmed that Kurtis Roberts will contest his rookie MotoGP season alongside the experienced veteran Nobuatsu Aoki in 2004, although a decision has yet to be made over which tyres will be fitted to the all-new V5 prototype. Both riders tested the 2003 bike at Valencia in December on Dunlops, but Team Manager Chuck Aksland today said that a move to Michelin has not been ruled out.

"I think everybody realised that we would be going with Kurtis and Nobu when we tested with them at Valencia but I can say now that they are definite," commented Aksland today. "As far as the tyres are concerned there is no decision as yet and it's all still up in the air. All I can say is that we are still negotiating with Dunlop and with Michelin."

Aksland added that the new machine was a drastic step forward for the V5 project, with major engine updates and a completely new chassis design. "The guys in the drawing department have been putting in a lot of hours drawing up all the pieces for the new bike and it looks really nice," he said. "Right now we are shooting for the end of February to have it up and running and it should be available for the first test, which will be at Jerez on the 19th, 20th and 21st February."

"The engine has the same V angle but we have redesigned the majority of components. The chassis is also very different – very clean looking – and I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised and appreciate the way the bike looks when it is finished," concluded Aksland.
