Elias faster on Honda than Aprilia after first day at Jerez

The factory Honda 250cc squad completed their first day of tests at the Jerez circuit today with new signing Toni Elías setting the pace. Elías, who already tested the RSW in a rain-hit test at Valencia before Christmas, enjoyed better weather in the south of Spain with sunshine and a slight wind making conditions ideal for the Spaniard and his Italian team-mate Roberto Rolfo. Elias demonstrated an extremely swift adjustment to his new bike, setting the fastest lap with a scorching time of 1'45.6 – three tenths quicker than his qualifying lap from the Spanish Grand Prix in May last year when he was riding the Aprilia.

Also present at the track was Elias' former mentor Alberto Puig, running the rule over latest Japanese prospect Hiroshi Aoyama, new team-mate to the injured Dani Pedrosa. Aoyama, who has worked extensively on the RSW in Japan, took the opportunity to get to grips with the track layout on his first ever visit to a European circuit and was little more than a second off the pace of Rolfo.

Unofficial lap times:

Toni Elías (Fortuna Honda) 1.45"6
Roberto Rolfo (Fortuna Honda) 1.46"2
Hiroshi Aoyama (Telefónica Movistar Honda) 1.47"3
