‘Rainman' West quickest on wet final day at Jerez

Factory Aprilia tests at the Jerez circuit in Spain were hit by rain on the third and final day, handing the initiative to wet specialist Anthony West to clock the fastest time. West, who took victory in torrential rain at Assen last season before clinching second place in similar conditions at Phillip Island later in the year, made the most of the opportunity to find a good wet setting with his privateer Aprilia - clocking up 36 laps whilst leading factory riders Manuel Poggiali and Randy De Puniet, the fastest man on the first two days, watched from pit-lane.

Although De Puniet emerged for five laps as afternoon sunshine began to dry the track slightly, Poggiali opted to stay dry and remained in the garage along with his team-mate and San Marino compatriot Alex De Angelis. The World Champion was in no mood to take any risks, with further tests planned for this weekend at Valencia.

Team Aspar's factory riders Fonsi Nieto and Sebastian Porto also took advantage of the improving conditions to run up a series of laps alongside their ‘Junior' team-mates Hector Faubel and Dirk Heidolf.

Unofficial lap times

Anthony West – 1'47.156
Sebastian Porto – 1'48.625
Fonsi Nieto – 1'49.480
Dirk Heidolf – 1'50.910
Héctor Faubel – 1'51.084
Randy De Puniet – 2'09.388
