Porto under lap record on final day at Valencia

Sebastián Porto continued his rapid adaptation to the Aprilia with a sensational lap time on the final day of factory tests at Valencia on Saturday. The Argentinean rider clocked a best lap of 1.36.1 – inside the circuit lap record held by Shinya Nakano of 1'36.398 and just three tenths off the pole record of 1'35.885 set in 2002 by Marco Melandri. 250cc rookie Alex De Angelis was also impressive, with a superb effort of 1'36.4 having only previously ridden the quarter-litre bike at Jerez earlier this week. Even World Champion Manuel Poggiali couldn't keep pace with his San Marino compatriot, clocking the third fastest time of the day ahead of Fonsi Nieto.

"Things have gone very well here and, of course, I am very pleased," commented Porto. "I can honestly say that this is the first time I have ridden a bike where I don't have to go beyond the limits to make it go fast, and I am very comfortable. The times are coming already and we can feel optimistic about the way things are going, but at the same time there is a long way to go and a lot of work to do."

Porto's Team Manager Jorge Martínez Aspar was delighted with his new signing: "Sebas is inside the lap record and that gives us very high hopes," he commented. "Fonsi has also improved his times from November and has completed many laps, so overall we are very happy."
