De Puniet smashes pole record with sensational lap at Valencia

Randy De Puniet signed off from the latest batch of factory Aprilia tests at Valencia with a scorching lap time which would have shattered the 250cc pole record at the Spanish circuit. De Puniet's unofficial time of 1'34.8, set at the end of a marathon session of 85 laps, is one and a half seconds under the current record of 1'36.398 held by Shinya Nakano and would have been enough to put him on the fourth row of the MotoGP grid at the Gran Premio Marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana last November.

Sebastián Porto and Fonsi Nieto were also under Nakano's record in a promising session for the Aprilia factory line-up which also includes Manuel Poggiali and Alex De Angelis. 250cc rookie De Angelis was today quicker than the World Champion, clocking an impressive time of 1'36.5 at the end of his third test with the quarter-litre machine. Former 125cc World Champion Arnaud Vincent improved his times from yesterday but was some four seconds off the lightening pace set by French compatriot De Puniet.
