Spectacular wheelies from the Sepang test

The preseason testing sessions not only provide the MotoGP teams with a vital opportunity to stage critical evolution work and parts development on their machines, but away from the glare of the fans and the pressure of the Grand Prix circus, they also give the riders a rare chance to express their more creative side. A sunny spring morning at Sepang, for example, with its sharp hairpins and long straights deserted of traffic, provides the perfect opportunity to test the torque and balance of the latest generation four-stroke prototypes – and riders from Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki and Aprilia were all keen to see how they measured up.

Coming out of the tight right-hander, down the slight dip onto the back straight behind the impressive main grandstand at the Malaysian circuit, motogp.com's cameraman was treated to some of the most spectacular wheelies you are ever likely to see. Surprisingly, and perhaps significantly, new Yamaha recruit and ultimate wheelie showman Valentino Rossi does not feature, but as you will discover there are a whole host of riders waiting to step into the limelight – including MotoGP rookies Ruben Xaus, Alex Hofmann and Shane Byrne – as well as a stunning synchronised effort from Troy Bayliss and Loris Capirossi.
