Sergio Gadea confident he can be competitive in his debut season

Sergio Gadea has spent little time in the company of his 125cc World Championship peers, but after a winter testing period which has proved to be much more intensive than many of his rivals, the Grand Prix rookie is already confident that he can be competitive in his first season. Gadea, who has joined Team Repsol Aspar as a direct replacement for Hector Barbera after coming through the same development project as his fellow Spaniard at the Valencia circuit, made four appearances as a wildcard last season and after the latest of a series of tests in Portugal he is approaching the new season in confident mood.

"I know Estoril after competing there last season as a wildcard so I didn't have to waste time learning the circuit," commented the 19 year old, who lapped alongside his team-mate Pablo Nieto and several other 125cc riders last weekend. "The weather was a problem, however, as it usually is there. Basically I am continuing my adaptation to the World Championship – everybody here is very quick and they are all good riders but I think I can compete with them on a one on one basis. As far as my times are concerned I'm pleased with what I did in Portugal but I know I can do better and I will be working to the maximum to achieve that.

"I am still some way off my rivals but we are working to cut that back at each test. On the final day we couldn't lap as we would have liked but at least we were able to test some of Dunlop's new wet tyres. To be honest it is always difficult to control a race bike in the wet but I think Dunlop have taken a step forward with the new compounds. Now we have a brief rest before the IRTA tests. I am anxious to get there so that I can measure myself against the rest of the guys who will be my rivals in this year's championship".
