Hayden fastest as two day test at Valencia concludes

Nicky Hayden has clocked the fastest time after the second day of MotoGP tests taking place this weekend at Valencia. Honda, Ducati, Suzuki, Proton and Aprilia were all present in Spain and Repsol Honda man Hayden closed two days of work with a quickest lap of 1.33.3, a tenth of a second better than works Ducati rider Loris Capirossi. The Italian continued to work on refining and developing his 2004 machine: "It is more of a laborious process than hard work. There are many new things and we are advancing step-by-step. We have worked a lot on the suspension and the chassis and now the bike is more stable, agile and better under braking. It has really come on and I hope we keep this momentum for the next test at Barcelona, a track at which I have some good memories."

Capirossi's team-mate Troy Bayliss finished the day third, a tenth quicker than Alex Barros. The HRC rider explained: "My injury is troubling me less every time I go out, but after this test I will travel to Brazil for some new rehabilitation to try and sort the problem once and for all." Regarding the RC211V, he remarked: "To compare it with the bike that I rode towards the end of 2002 is complicated. The motorcycle is very different and the tyres we are using now are much better."

The Proton KR team carried on working with their new V5 – that appeared on track for the first time at these tests – but their efforts ended abruptly half way through the afternoon when Kurtis Roberts, who up until now had been riding the 2003 model of the four-stroke, suffered a crash before he had even completed a lap onboard the latest 2004 version. The new bike caught fire and was sufficiently damaged in the spill. Roberts sustained a dislocated shoulder.

Before the accident, Nobuatsu Aoki was able to rack-up some mileage and walked away with some positive impressions: "I was working with the new chassis during these two days and I could easily see that it was better than the previous model because I could enter the corners a lot faster. I think that this year we will be a lot more competitive because we are managing to work with new materials during the pre-season. The bike is different from last year's; it is much lighter and there is a lot of room for development."
