Bright spell for Rossi on damp day Down Under

Valentino Rossi was able to break in the new updated engine on his 2004 YZR-M1 despite damp conditions on the first day of factory Yamaha tests at Phillip Island on Tuesday. The MotoGP World Champion, who left the Australian circuit two weeks ago requesting more horsepower from the Japanese firm, made the most of a drying track in the afternoon to run up fourteen laps after spending a frustrating morning watching factory colleague Marco Melandri gather crucial wet weather experience on the powerful 990cc machine.

Norick Abe briefly joined Melandri on track in the morning but wasn't able to complete as many laps as he would have wished due to mechanical problems. Carlos Checa emerged alongside team-mate Rossi during the afternoon bright spell, both riders using intermediate tyres.

Unofficial lap times

Valentino Rossi - 1'32.10 (14 laps)
Carlos Checa - 1'34.30 (22 laps)
Marco Melandri - 1'34.34 (49 laps)
Norick Abe - 1'35.27 (35 laps)
