Emilio Alzamora recovers his racing spirit for 2004

Emilio Alzamora returns from the shadows of world class racing this week as he unveils his plans for a busy 2004 season at both national and international level. The former 125cc World Champion will be in Barcelona on Thursday to be unveiled as Team Director of the RACC-Caja Madrid team which will contest the 125cc Spanish Championship. The 30 year old is also preparing for a special role within the Fortuna Honda 250cc World Championship squad run by his former manager and great friend Dani Amatriaín.

"The chance to direct this team in the 125cc Spanish Championship is an exciting challenge for me," said Alzamora. "Last year I thought about a lot of things and I realised that a circle had been completed. I just didn't have the spark on the bike that I had enjoyed throughout my career and I realised that I was no longer motivated by racing, but I have always felt a part of this world and I want to stay in it. That is not always easy but I have been lucky enough to get involved in this project and the truth is that I am enjoying it a lot."

The RACC-Caja Madrid form part of the Monlau Competition structure presided over by Amatriaín, and Alzamora will be in charge of overseeing the development of their young hopefuls – 14 year old Aleix Espargaró and 13 year old Pere Tutusaus, who finished first and third respectively in the Catalan Championship last year.

"The enthusiasm and talent of these youngsters is contagious and I have discovered that we all transmit positive vibes to each other. I can give them my knowledge and experience and they have helped me rediscover my motivation for racing – even though I am not out there on the track going 200km per hour. The objective of this team is to develop future champions. My job at the moment is to organise the preseason and give them advice on their technical and physical preparation."

With regard to his involvement with Fortuna Honda, Alzamora commented: "I have a very good relationship with the team because of Monlau and my relationship with Dani Amatraín and I will be helping out at the Spanish races. I will be offering my experience simply on a technical level and as a representative of the Fortuna brand, but it is pretty obvious that both Elías and Rolfo are top class riders and don't need my advice to help them develop."
