Mika Kallio takes two national ice racing titles

Mika Kallio warmed up for the 125cc Official Tests at Barcelona on Monday by clinching two national titles in the final round of the Finnish Ice Racing Championship. The 21 year old, who will contest the 125cc Road Racing World Championship with KTM, rode specially adapted versions of the Austrian factory's 125cc and 500cc motocross bikes to victory on both classes, putting the gloss on a triumphant winter on home territory.

"Both categories were very tight and three riders had possibilities of taking the title before the final round," commented Kallio, who has taken part in the winter series alongside his brother Vesa since 1997. "I was able to win the 125 race by 10 seconds, but the 500 race was decided only on the last corner and luckily I won by 0.27 seconds. Before this winter I had only one championship title from ice racing, so it is very pleasing to now have two more!"

Vesa Kallio led the 250cc race over half distance but made a series of minor mistakes on the final couple of laps and slipped to third place. Vesa finished the quarter-litre series in fifth place, having missed one round due to preseason tests with Team Hungary, with whom he will contest his rookie 125cc World Championship in 2004.
