Alvaro Bautista reflects on a positive test for Team Seedorf Racing

The 125cc Official Test at the Catalunya circuit on Tuesday and Wednesday ended up as a head to head battle for the quikest time between Team Seedorf Racing riders Hector Barbera and Alvaro Bautista. The first official time sheets of 2004 had Barberá, the highest ranked riders in the class, on top on the first day, only to be comprehensively bettered by his less experienced team-mate Bautista, who left the session with the fastest time of the session overall with a lap of 1'50.922.

Bautista admitted that even he was surprised by his effort but cited hard work as the key. "It has been a pretty intense day and a half," said the 19 year old at the end of the session. "We have received all the new material from Aprilia and worked hard to get it all working together – the suspension, chassis, engine… it seems as though we have a got a good set-up and I was able to lap consistent 51's more or less the whole time. In the end I managed to get down to a 1.50.9 and I'm very happy about that because it is a pretty quick time. I didn't expect it, but working hard and doing things the right way brings results so that is what we will continue to try and do."

Bautista remains in the same team with whom he made his full debut last season but admits that, after a learning season, this year will be much different. "It's the same team but this year we have official material from Aprilia, we've changed our suspension suppliers and we also switched tyres from Bridgestone to Dunlop, which all helps to make us more competitive. I am also benefiting from the positive experience I gathered at the end of last season, when I started to put some good results together."

The youngster added that seeing his name at the top of the time sheets at what is a key stage of the preseason has changed his mentality for the upcoming campaign. "It is true that when you see yourself up there it gives you a confidence boost and it has changed my mentality already," he said. "Last season I was thinking about getting in the top fifteen and being competitive but now I must admit I am starting to think about finishing on the podium and winning races. There is a lot of hard work to be done but, hopefully, I can be at the top of the pile again when the season starts."
