Domenicali takes heart from lap times

Ducati Corse CEO Claudio Domenicali revealed that the factory Ducati Marlboro team returned to Europe this week in positive mood after a gruelling first round of the MotoGP season at Welkom. With the latest generation Desmosedici struggling to keep pace with the evolution demonstrated by Honda and Yamaha throughout qualifying, the Italian took heart from his riders' progress in the race and said that he was optimistic of further improvements at Jerez next week.

"We're pretty happy," said Domenicali. "Both Loris (Capirossi) and Troy (Bayliss) did great lap times, so we end the weekend in positive mood. Loris suffered for the little mistake he made in his final qualifying run which put him a little way back on the grid.

"But he came through well in the race and was three to four tenths a lap faster than Hayden at the end. Troy did his best lap of the weekend in the race, which proves that the changes we made to his bike were good. We worked on geometry and suspension to make him feel more confident.

"This was the first race for the new GP4 project, and I think we still have plenty more to come from this machine. We are already working on improvements at home, and with our technical parts Michelin and Shell Advance. Now we work for Jerez…".
