Nieto comments on good start in Welkom

Pablo Nieto was one of the protagonists at the opening round of the 2004 World Championship in Welkom. The rider of the Team Master Repsol ran with the front group during the best part of the 24 laps and battled until the end against Italians Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) and Roberto Locatelli (Aprilia) along with Australian Casey Stoner. By the flag Nieto could not secure a podium position but his fourth place represented a promising start to the campaign, particularly for the aspirations the Madrid resident has ahead of his home GP next week in Jerez.

"In truth it was a shame to take fourth, I had made almost the whole lap in third and on the final back straight Stoner pulled out of my slipstream and passed me with only two corners to go. It was difficult out there but we tried and at least we made a decent race," he explained concerning the last few moments of the GP.

"To be honest I am quite happy because I started seventh, I finished the opening lap in that position and then pushed at a strong speed, arriving at the front and keeping with them right until the end," he continued.

"For this race I think it was very important to score some good points and to be as high up the order as possible. Now we go to Jerez, my ‘home', and a track that I really like."

125cc, 2004, Pablo Nieto
