Experience the historic first lap at Welkom with Biaggi and Capirossi

The first round of the MotoGP World Championship 2004 will go down in the history books not only for the exploits of the race winner Valentino Rossi. The betandwin.com Africa's Grand Prix was also the first time that the MotoGP grid lined up with three riders per row after new rules implemented by the Grand Prix Comission to make the start of the race safer for the riders on the increasingly powerful 990cc four-stroke prototypes.

The new grid offered contrasting fortunes for the riders depending on their position – with the front riders advantaged by the handicap facing the riders further back.

For example, for second placed Max Biaggi the new grid worked ideally, as he gave chase to pole position holder and first corner leader Valentino Rossi troubled only by the attentions of fellow front row starter Sete Gibernau. However, for the usually explosive Loris Capirossi and his Ducati Desmosedici it was more difficult than ever to make up ground from the third row of the grid and he struggled to keep in touch with the lead group.

Enjoy the start of the race and the entire first lap onboard with the two Italians by clicking the video link at the top of the page, and watch out for some outrageous overtaking from their plucky young compatriot Marco Melandri from the best seat in the house.
