Di Meglio reflects on the best result of his career

Mike Di Meglio, the youngest rider in the 125cc World Championship at just 16 years of age, immediately paid back the faith shown in him by the Globet.com Racing team when he stormed to fifth place from a front row start in the first round of the season at Welkom last week. Di Meglio, who celebrated his birthday in January, crossed the line ahead of his team-mate and manager Gino Borsoi to take his best ever Grand Prix result after a tough rookie season in 2003.

"I was so happy to finish in fifth place," reflected Di Meglio. "I got a bad start and I was back down in eleventh after the first lap. It was difficult to recover positions but I felt more comfortable when the tyres went off and I got a good rhythm together.

"When Gino saw that I was making up ground on him he let me past. He's a great team-mate to have because he helped me so much to learn the circuit and I was able to improve each day.

"The mechanics worked really well and gave 100% to set-up the bike, so I also gave my maximum to give them all the information they needed. Between us we've made a lot of progress and that is really important because now I can look forward to the next race with more confidence, knowing that I am already comfortable on the bike."
