Randy Mamola meets the Stereophonics

Life doesn't get much more rock and roll than the MotoGP World Championship, and even one of the world's biggest bands would have to agree. The Stereophonics, who leave this week to support David Bowie on his US tour, played the final gig of their own European circuit in Barcelona last Saturday and invited Grand Prix legend Randy Mamola along to enjoy the show.

It was payback for bass guitarist Richard Jones, a lifelong fan of Mamola and of motorcycle racing in general. Jones is a regular at the MotoGP races and was one of the privileged few to experience the sheer speed at first hand, riding pillion with the four-time 500cc World Championship runner-up on the Yamaha two-seat bike at Jerez two years ago.

"Randy frightened the life out of me that day so it was a pleasure to dish out our own brand of rock and roll to him," laughed Jones, who was heading straight back to the UK after the gig to ride a track day at Silverstone. "It is a real shame I can't make it down there this year because I'd love to go with him on the Ducati Desmosedici and the MotoGP race looks like it will be awesome.

"I haven't seen the race from Welkom yet because we were travelling but my Mum recorded it so I'll watch it as soon as I get home. I'm sure I'll get to a couple of races before the season is out."

Whether or not the band can fit a race into their busy schedule, they are set to meet up with Mamola again just days before the Cinzano British Grand Prix in July, when they hope to be available to play an acoustic set at a charity dinner in aid of Riders for Health.

"I have been wanting to see the Stereophonics ever since I met Richard at Jerez and I wasn't let down – they were excellent," commented Mamola, a self confessed rock and roll fanatic. "I must admit it was a bit loud though – even louder than the Ducati! I'll be able to walk down pit-lane without my ear plugs in this weekend!

"Seriously though it was good to meet the guys again and it's always good to know people so serious about MotoGP and Riders for Health. Hopefully they can come to a race soon."
