Porto smashes pole record and his Aprilia

Sebastian Porto enjoyed a bittersweet afternoon at the Jerez circuit this afternoon after a display of audacious riding which saw him end the day with a new pole record in one hand and a smashed motorcycle in the other. The aggressive Argentinean, who already showed both sides of his character with an off-track excursion and then a sensational comeback from last place to the podium in the first round at Welkom, clocked the fastest ever lap of the circuit by a quarter-litre machine in a time of 1'43.673 before running slightly wide onto the grass as he entered a fast right-hand corner and spectacularly crashing his Aprilia.

Porto had dominated throughout the afternoon session and his provisional pole setting lap, which was almost three tenths of a second inside the previous record held by Daijiro Kato, secured top spot despite the attentions of Manuel Poggiali, Dani Pedrosa and Randy De Puniet, the only three riders who came within a second of the Argentinean and who comfortably make up the front row in that order.

Roberto Rolfo showed signs of progression with the new Honda, lapping fifth fastest to head up the second row from his team-mate Toni Elias and factory Aprilia pair Fonsi Nieto and Alex De Angelis.
