Rolfo takes dominant win in rain-plagued race

Roberto Rolfo mastered the treacherously wet conditions to score a brilliant win in the 250 Gran Premio Marlboro de España. The italian rocketed to the front and his impressive display of consistency on a soaked track allowed him to take his third career victory, handing Honda a second consecutive success this year.

Rolfo's main threat came from Frenchman Randy De Puniet, who eventually took second aboard his factory Aprilia, almost nine seconds adrift of the italian. Previously second in Welkom, De Puniet now leads the World Championship. Spaniard Fonsi Nieto took third in front of Anthony West, after a final lap move.

Just as in the previous race, the bad weather has dictated the proceedings. Rookie Dani Pedrosa took an early lead, but went down on the fourth lap, while he was trying to shake off his rivals. Previously, reigning World Champion Manuel Poggiali and Pedrosa's teammate Hiroshi Aoyama had been caught out by the wet conditions.

Under the heavy rain, Roberto Rolfo gradually increased the gap, showing his trademark consistency. Behind him, the pack was reduced by numerous falls, including Davies, Battaini, Guintoli, Bataille and Molina.

Alex Debon took fifth in front of Alex de Angelis, Sebastian Porto and Arnaud Vincent, while Lefort and Matsudo completed the top 10.

Rolfo's victory moved him up to second in the Championship, 8 points behind De Puniet. Dani Pedrosa is now third, 15 points behind the Frenchman.
