Simoncelli grabs first ever victory at Jerez

Marco Simoncelli claimed his debut win at a rain-soaked Jerez, host of the Gran Premio Marlboro de España. Simoncelli was handed his first Grand Prix victory when aussie youngster Casey Stoner crashed out of contention while in the lead. German veteran Steve Jenkner and local favorite Hector Barbera completed an all-Aprilia podium.

Heavy rain hit the spanish track from the start of the race and was the main factor. On the first lap, Alvaro Bautista, who started from the front line of the grid for the first time of his career, was one of the early fallers, while Casey Stoner was quick to seize the lead from poleman Simoncelli. The italian teenager was demoted to ninth in the early stages of the race, but eventually managed to rejoin the chasing pack.

Casey Stoner was pulling a healthy lead over the chasing pack - including Dovizioso, Barbera, Jenkner and Simoncelli, until he got caught by ever-worsening conditions. Then, Simoncelli only had to push in the closing stages to secure his first Grand Prix win.

Behind him, Barbera, Jenkner and Dovizioso provided a final tussle for the podium. Jenkner, who previously recovered from a near crash, emerged in second position in front of Barbera. Dovizioso took a cautious fourth to extend his Championship lead to 10 points over Jenkner and Locatelli.

Casey Stoner recovered from his crash to take fifth in front of Ballerini, veterans Ui and Locatelli. Nieto and Giansanti completed the top 10.
