Porto outshines De Puniet on first day

Sebastian Porto grabbed the headlines from local favourite Randy De Puniet after a pole record-breaking lap in the 250cc class which could clinch his second pole position in succession. The Argentinean rider, who started from the front of the grid two weeks ago at Jerez after setting the best time on the Friday, clocked a time of 1'38.090 to hold off the early championship leader in second place by a relatively comfortable margin of 0.327 seconds.

Manuel Poggiali was third quickest whilst Dani Pedrosa, who completes the front row in fourth, was the only other man to lap within a second of Porto. Despite his front row position Pedrosa was not a happy man at the end of the session after being forced off track in the final hairpin by Fonsi Nieto.

Nieto, second fastest behind Porto in the morning session, qualified sixth fastest behind Roby Rolfo and is joined on the provisional second row by Toni Elias and Franco Battaini.

Italian rider Max Sabbatani did not take part this afternoon after fracturing his right ankle in a spectacular crash during the morning free practice session.
