Checa delight at podium return

Carlos Checa ended a podium dry spell stretching back to the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2002 when he clinched second place at Le Mans.. The Yamaha rider, who followed victorious compatriot Sete Gibernau across the line, expressed his delight at his return to the rostrum after disappointing results at Welkom and Jerez which he says are now confined to history

"I am really satisfied because my performance today crowned a very positive weekend and showed that we are on the right track, as had already been evident at Jerez," commented Checa. "This second place is fruit of a lot of hard work from everybody at Yamaha and it puts me back on a path which I want to stay on in the future.

"After a tough season last year things have changed and the bike now favours my riding style. Today I showed that what happened at Welkom and Jerez is in the past and we have to continue working in the same way to stay consistent.

"It was an exciting race and I couldn't relax for a second, I got away at the front and tried to set a fast and consistent rhythm to open up a gap but Sete caught up and passed me on the twelfth lap. It was tough for me to match his rhythm after that and I had to worry more about Biaggi and Rossi coming behind me.

"Fortunately I was able to hold them off and pick my way through the backmarkers at the end to take second place."
